Garage Born and Bred: Icons and Companies

Garage Born and Bred: Icons and Companies

At Dominator we believe that garages are more than simply places to leave your car – they can be the start of something fantastic.

Here are a few of our favourite iconic brands that started out of a humble garage.

Line 7 Marine

This Kiwi company was founded in a West Auckland garage in 1963. Since then it has produced a range of specialised clothing for athletes and sailors. On its journey it has outfitted Olympians, professional yacht races, America’s Cup contestants and many more besides.

The brand has become renowned for its consistent toughness, durability, and style.

Amazon

Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer. But did you know its humble beginnings? Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 as an online bookstore, out of his garage in Bellevue, Washington.

After selling his first book in mid-1995, the company has expanded its control of the market not only over books, but across most other things too.

Bezos has been ranked as the world’s richest man – with his net worth having been measured over $100 billion. Not a bad effort for a garage business.

Apple

Apple Computers was started by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976. Originally, they sold just 50 units of Wozniak’s Apple I Computer at $500 each. The computers were hand-built in a garage in Cupertino, California.

The founders are today regarded as computer pioneers, and Apple is the most valuable technology company in the world.

Disney

The Walt Disney Company began in 1923 out of a garage owned by Walt Disney’s uncle. Walt Disney and his brother Roy filmed the what became a short cartoon film called Alice’s Wonderland (1923).

From there – the rest is history – and Disney is one of the most valuable entertainment companies in the world – and their cartoons and entertainments are fondly remembered by children and adults the world over.

Google

Stanford graduate students Larry Page and Sergey Brin started what became Google from a garage in September 1998.

Amusingly, the duo thought that work on the company was interfering with their studies, and they attempted to sell the company for a mere $1 million. Last year Google’s revenue was over $110 billion. They’re probably glad that sale never happened.

Harley Davidson

William Harley and his mate Arthur Davidson built their first engine to power a bicycle out of a small wooden shed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin over a couple of years and launched Harley-Davidson in 1903.

Today it remains the world’s best known motorcycle brand – with people knowing exactly what you mean when you refer to ‘a Harley’.

42 Below

More recently, a New Zealand bloke named Geoff Ross decided that he could do a better vodka than a whole host of international competitors. So, he built a still at his home and began to sell his vodka to local bars around his neighbourhood.

When the vodka started doing well, he turned it into a proper business, and today his 42 Below vodka is one of the most highly acclaimed brands worldwide.
