Garages are built for storage, but many of us cram so much in that it's tricky to use them for their intended purpose, storing cars. With limited space and the need to store a variety of oddly-shaped items, we need to be smart about practical storage solutions that work well in the garage while keeping within spending parameters. Nevertheless, there are plenty of ways to make your own garage storage and purchase storage systems that can help you get your garage organised and keep it clutter-free. Below, we've looked at three DIY garage storage solutions and a couple of purchasing options to help get you started creating efficient garage storage.

One practical storage solution for your garage is to build your own shelving. This can be done using a variety of materials and gives you the advantage of being able to customise the size and shape of your shelves to fit your specific storage needs. Building your own shelves can also be a cost-effective solution, as you can use materials you already have on hand or purchase them at a lower cost than pre-made shelves.

Pegboard materials and placement options are many and varied, but one thing they all have in common is clearly visible contents.
Another DIY storage solution for your garage is to create a pegboard storage system. This can be done by attaching a pegboard to the wall or other surface and using hooks to hang tools and other items you'd like to keep at arm's reach. A pegboard storage system is a great way to keep items off the floor and make them easily accessible.
Making use of vertical storage space is an efficient way to use every bit of your garage for storage. This brings us to the third DIY storage solution for your garage, hanging storage racks, hooks and suspended shelving. The simplest storage solutions can be made with PVC pipes or rope for storing items such as garden tools, brooms, surfboards and fishing rods. A more sophisticated storage solution is suspended shelving or racks. This video provides a detailed tutorial on building the sturdy suspended shelving on the left of the image below. You'll need to have some building competency, and a good selection of tools, including a drill, ladder, and circular or drop saw. Slightly less complicated, this tutorial shows how to build a sliding ceiling storage system to house large plastic bins (top right of the image below).

The tutorial linked above includes CAD drawings showing how the units will be put together. Above, bottom right: If you're looking for a five-minute storage solution, a couple of ropes may fit the bill. This option is ideal for long, bulky items like kayaks, ladders, surfboards and spare timber.
If you prefer to purchase a storage system for your garage, there are a number of options available in New Zealand. Metal shelving units usually come as a kitset, providing a quick option for organising tools and assorted equipment. Commonly made from galvanised steel, some also include timber shelving and different size and colour options are readily available. If you're not handy with tools, are short on time or want to match different storage systems, pre-made metal shelf units are a durable and affordable way to go.
Another option is to purchase a modular storage system. These systems are designed to be customised and can be configured to fit your specific storage needs. Usually sold as 'easy to assemble', you could also go the route of a customised, installed full garage makeover.

Whether it's a DIY project or made-to-order, finding the perfect storage solution for your garage is a satisfying job. A variety of solutions are available to help you get your garage organised and clutter-free. Now, the next challenge is organising all your gear and keeping the space tidy!
